Media Audiences & Products - The Target Audience.

OK so you've . . .

Told me about the DIFFERENT SECTORS of the media.

Told me about DIFFERENT PRODUCTS you use from each sector and about the COMPANIES that make them.

It's now time, again for each product you've written about to tell me what their TARGET AUDIENCE is. In other words, the audience the producers of the product made the product FOR.

Obviously a Target Audience is important for producers of media products so they know what to put in their products that will appeal to a big audience. They will tweak every element of the product, and the way it's advertised, in order to reach that target audience. Beyond that, any company wanting to make a product without first knowing WHO will buy it simply won't get their product off the ground.

To complete this element of your work follow these steps . . . .

1. Go to each of the products you've written about in your work. For each one go through steps 2 and 3.

2. Add the subheading TARGET AUDIENCE & tell me in basic terms who you think the target audience for your particular product is. What's their general age? Are they mainly female or male or split evenly? Are they working class  or middle-class and what does this mean about their income? Are they a mainstream or niche/alternative audience?

How are you going to find this out? A mix of your own instincts/common sense, but also research. Look at the product itself, the website for it, its social media presence. What do they tell you about the audience? Is their promotional material fast-moving, brightly coloured, intense (younger audience) or gentler, more sedate (older audience)? Is the product full of macho imagery (male audience) or more feminine in its appeal? What kind of class of people will be into it - poorer/working class (what we call CDEs) or richer/middle class (what we call ABCs)?

3. Then finally - add to your profiles by giving me what you think about the LIFESTYLE of the audience for each product. What other media choices will they be making - what tv channels, radio stations, mags, papers, games etc will they be accessing? What's likely to be their other interests outside of the media?

4. Finally - save your post or publish it.
